Codecs in Media Player - Microsoft Support

Codecs allow you to play different formats of audio and video files. Media Player supports a wide variety of codecs. Most are included out of the box; some additional codecs can be installed from the Microsoft Store.

Note: You should avoid loading those mega-codec packs. In the end every time you play an audio or video file the player needs to run down the list to make sure it has the best one. Only get the codecs you need. The fact that Microsoft offers the codecs you will need 99% of the time for free now, get them from Microsoft and not some link the file you are trying to play says you need. Many times it's trying to get you to load a virus.
