A failed HD is perhaps the single worst computer related failure for the average user. For some reason they think that files on a HD are forever. Nothing could be further from the truth esp. if the HD is installed in a system and not portable storage.
Aside from malicious data encryption from ransomware the drive is damaged.
The funny thing is when I confront a customer whose laptop drive has failed with all their precious irreplaceable photos and documents gone you ask them "What happened?". They will look you straight in the eye 99% of the time and answer "Nothing".
