All Sound from my speakers has stopped.
There is a red X by the volume icon at bottom right on the monitor
Although I believe I am following the troubleshooting instructions I am unable to make a difference.
Can anyone with time to spare guide me through this please ?

I would need some more information first.

Did you install/uninstall anything before it happened, including updates?

Did you use a new sound device?

Are you running Windows 10?

Did you try running windows update and maybe checking the "view optional updates" menu? Sometimes it provides new drivers (they are not necessarily "better" than the ones you already have, but you could give it a shot).

I would start by right-clicking the sound icon, selecting "sound", going to the "playback" tab, right-clicking some empty space, selecting both options (show disabled & disconnected devices) and then right clicking each device and selecting "test" to see how it goes.

You could also check device manager. Maybe some driver got messed up.

Right click the icon and unmute audio.
 
Click the start (bottom far right icon) > Settings (the gear icon) > Sound. See what is showing under "SOUND" , choose your output device.
There should be some reference to speakers and your sound device. Either choose that from the drop down or if it's blank type "device manager" in the search box in the upper right just below the Home button.
See if your sound device has a driver installed and is working. If so come back here. Have you been using wired headphones lately?
 
Hi there, Yes I use wired Headphones most of the time .
My computer is not yet set up for Bluetooth.
But to return.....thanks to you the sound has now come back.
Regrettably the sound is faulty.
THERE is something like a rattling sound that seems to be triggered by every note.
A bit like when you place a wooden ruler so it overlaps your desk. then thwack the free end of it with your thumb , making it vibrate and producing, as I say, a kind of rattling effect.
I have never heard this style of distortion before on anything else.
I do not think anything is broken , and I cannot make this noise go away .
I am wondering , perhaps a bit fancifully, if it could be something to do with the computer's sample rate, or possibly that of the external sound card which is M-Audio ?
Any idea Mr Dog ?
 
I would try fiddling with sound effects/enhancements under your device's settings menu. I faced this issue (in case we are talking about the same "sound") and it seemed to get partially fixed when I disabled loudness equalization.

Could be a hardware issue, too. Does this sound go away when you use other devices (headsets, earbuds, external speakers, etc)?

If you have that sound problem with your wired headphones as well, it sounds (no pun intended) that it may be a IRQ (interrupt request) problem particularly since it's an outboard sound card.
I suggest you run down this checklist, increasing buffer sizes, etc. may improve your sound quality. Personally I have never had any experience with an M-Audio card so you are on your own.
M-Audio Troubleshooting
 
At first, You need to run The audio troubleshooter, it might be able to fix audio problems automatically.
If The audio troubleshooter did not fix the problem then you need to check for updates, if there is any update available, then restart your PC and see if your sound is working properly.
If that didn't solve your problem then Restart Audio Services
