I NEVER have an active Internet connection when loading or initializing a fresh copy of Windows. If Windows can't call home right away YOU get to choose some features that Windows automatically configures otherwise.
That's a good rule for any program you install. Keep it off the Internet for as long as possible so you can load cracks or use keygens before it can call home. Some times the crack will be neutralized when the unpatched program calls home for the first time and is modified. I have learned that lesson the hard way more than once.
