Simple. Microsoft is trying to make Windows more uniform and making customizations harder to perform. It's Microsoft's Apple envy. That's why I really find Mac O/S hard to use. Apple's way or no way.

Quickest and definitely the best way to make a shortcut.
1, Locale the file you want to shortcut,

2. right click and drag it to where you want the shartcut

3. then select Create shortcut here.

Simples.

Works on all versions of windows.

yes i did end up figuring this out before i made this post but still....... i geuss microsoft likes to leaves enough tasks for us power users to potentially incentivise, ill make my whole life savings putting desktop icons on peoples backgrounds.......
