Here are a couple of programs or should I say suites that you should always have handy. You are going to need a couple of USB sticks but that's it. Both of these are absolutely free and in many cases the best programs you can get for your purposes. I would highly reccomend grabbing Medicat USb before you need it if you have only one PC hat hand.

#2 Portable Apps. Yeah I know by now I would hope most members here are aware of them. It a darn handy site, plenty of just about anything you could think of can be crammed on a USB stick for portable use or loaded locally. A Dog favorite for years now.
