Any Tips on Hacking a Chromebook?

I have this HP Pavilion 14" Chromebook. I did the Mr.Chromebox BIOS hack and loaded it with the latest version of Neverware but all I ended up with is a Netsurfer and it's boring. I suppose it will end up a Linux or Ubuntu system but that's not very fun either. No apps to futz with even with the Neverware upgrade.
Have I missed something? Even through this laptop has a beautiful display it really doesn't do anything fun in it's current state. HELP!

I am starting to wish I didn't either. Talk about no fun. It's about as fun as paying your taxes. If I had paid for this system I would be pissed. All I wanted to do is get it to load stuff off of Google Play and run it. Nope! It keeps displaying it's no longer supported and I have to buy a newer one. What kind of BS is that? I upped the memory and HD capacity as well.

it reminds me of my adventures with tracfone (before i smashed my last one and gave up on phones completely)

there is simply no support for hacking or cracking the phones that tracfone sells; they make them that way on purpose of course, so you will just continue to use it as is or whatever

there were some success stories with rooting the phone, but to what purpose? IDK, i guess ppl find things to do with it, ala 'mr. robot'

i was more curious to turn my older phones into something different or new-ish, with one of the various android alternatives, but these phones simply have no support within those platforms; perhaps part of it is the relatively low numbers of tracfones compared to the more popular at&t plan phones, for example, but I think it is because the phone is so gimped from the start that it is just not worth bothering with, probably having some hardwired tracfone code in the chip, something that makes it essentially impossible to work with in any way other than intended

my theory at least; everyone else just says, don't bother, or it's not possible, or nobody's done it, or 'what's tracfone', lol

so it sounds like this is the case with your device, it is hardwired to google and they want you to buy a new one

the level of crack you would have to apply would be to create your own google to fool the device into thinking it was being serviced by them, or perhaps to change the internet clock to tell it the time is when it was still in service

how strange that they sell a device with a time limit on it

they know that enough people will just buy a new one that they can just not care about the numbers of people who will be upset about it

something like, the law of bs marketing, the level of bs people are willing to accept

i would like to have nothing to do with google, but i'm addicted to kpop, which is mainly found on youtube

Jamvaru you have outlined very accurately the very reason I do what I do. F' em there has to be a way to subvert this Chromebook.
It's one of those the journey is more fun than the destination projects. To be able to see that I can do it is all I really care about. That's how crackers minds work although I am long since retired.

If a Chromebook is already registered to someone else or business the only way to hack it is to remove the BOIS chip and soldier on a new one to clear it and register it to yourself. Had to do it on several Chromebooks. Chromebooks have a hard coded net registry on the BIOS chip.

No not really. Mr. Chromebox pretty much hands control of the BIOS back to the user. Neverware is an up to date version of Chrome w/ open source hacks. My whole reason for messing with this system was something I could load apps from Google play and see what the heck they are doing, etc. before I load them on my phone. Needless to say neverware is blocked from running any apps from play. Supposedly there is a hack for Chromium that gives you limited functions but I have been too lazy to spend much time with it, diminishing returns as they say.

I'll either try to revert the BIOS and reload whatever version of Android it had and see if there's a way to subvert that or just turn it into a Linux system. It was never registered as far as I can tell, it looks unused. Little wonder it's not exactly a barn burner. The only Cele based system I ever had in my house (or will have in the future, how embarrassing). Even a 128GB SSD upgrade and 2 more GB of DDR3 RAM doesn't really help it. Opening up this little gem to do the upgrade was no picnic. It wasn't made with having to service it in mind This one is heading to the scrap pile as soon as they reopen work. Perhaps the most boring computer I ever had.

haha, well, you could donate it if you can get linux to run on it (not officially, too much red tape, just gift it to someone, some school kid maybe, who knows; perhaps connect via a facebook group or something, craigs list: free computer for school aged kid)

so, you CAN put linux on it?
the problem is getting android to work on it? probably because of the bios, likely the only real hard-wired aspect, as they would be too lazy to do anything else.

I have Sparky-Linux on my rather old dell lattitude d430 (32gb ssd, 2gb ram)
It has overheating issues so I'm planning on replacing the thermal compound and adding a copper shim; i've got the parts, just not the motivation.
It can do youtube videos at 720p but not with the overheating, so only 480p. I"ve set the turbo to off so it runs at 800mhz instead of sometimes 1200, which causes overheating. Do you suppose my fix will work? The fan still blows and it gets quite hot.

Wow that's really unlike a Dell to overheat esp. a Latitude. I wonder if the copper capillary tubes on the heat sink were damaged or just plain leaked gas. I had an HP laptop someone gave me suffer from that problem. If you can wait I toss D430's out all day long. I can pull a heat sink out and send it to you if you don't mind a delay, otherwise good ol' eBay.
Back to the HP Chromebook it looks like it's being rejected based on the O/S although Google does keep track of your Android and Chrome O/S systems by email address. Google is aware this system exists but doesn't allow the Neverware flavor of Chrome it seems so it doesn't appear the current BIOS Mr. Chromebook is the problem.
My Chromebook has been demoted to the same priority of your Latitude but with so much free time i will probably mess with it again soon. If the weather is nice I am outside but these darn April showers prevent that too many times. So good luck with your cooling problem. If anything changes let me know. Until the politicians make up their damn minds who knows what's going to happen?

righton, i've decided to take up speed-walking as a sport; i need to get outside more, and i need the motivation of a semi-professional competitive experience to do it, or i will just blow it off

i'm going to try replacing the heat-conductive material, and adding a copper shim, as i recall that they use some sort of foam material instead of goo and it decays over time; do you notice this in your d430's?
anyway, i'm playing black desert online right now, so i just don't really care, haha; but i'm still curious to see if i can make use of the laptop, sort of like how i looked at cell phones for a while, till i smashed it

i've always looked at laptops as inferior because of smaller size
could also be good for reading
i've got an older kindle that i've been meaning to use for that, lol
wound up just buying cheap books on ebay instead

oh, one thing i like about the laptop is it has an off switch for the wireless components
my character is 'sleeping' in bdo right now, double 'energy gain'

What the heck does that mean? I can program in three different languages, and x86 machine code although I haven't gone there in years. Heck I was even pushing bits around in my 6502 but gave that up because it made me really weird.
