Chromium - 100% free & open-source browser

Chromium

Chromium is a free and open-source software project from Google. The source code can be compiled into a web browser.

Google uses the code to make its Chrome browser, which has more features than Chromium. Many other browsers are also based on Chromium code, most notably Microsoft Edge and Opera. In addition, some parties (although not Google) build the code as-is and release browsers with the Chromium name.

Chromium's user...

Nice th3m.
The first thing is KNOW THE SOURCE YOU ARE DOWNLOADING THIS PROGRAM FROM!
I can't stress that enough. Since it's open source there are many versions being distributed thru shady sites that contain a variety of nasties. One comes to mind that you are forced to d/l and install in order to play a "free game"
Just be careful. I run this in my CloudReady ex-Chromebook. It's like Google Chrome w/o all the spying. I don't remember add-on availability. Google is getting like Apple in regards to will they won't actually d/l and install their apps on Chromium (and Android o/s unless the publishers allowed Google to lift their leg on it and mark their territory.) There really is no good reason for that except they do sponsor the repository and they claim to protect your security which I guess is one way to look at it.

The site seems trustworthy. Many years of activity and here some comments from the site maintainer (jikoo):

The builds are really good, cause they have all the codecs, DRM and extension support from chrome web store.

Chromium is a pretty descent choice for desktop browser. Instant updates, open-source. Only drawback is that you need to do the updates manually.

Thanks th3m!
I found this wandering around the official site:
" Chromium on iOS is a big fake! "
That's harsh, true but harsh. But then again how many people running iOS really care? My older iPad started giving me a hard time with Chrome today. Truth be told, I take it to the potty with me. That's about all it's worth anymore. Still has a good battery unfortunately. Hope you don't mind me sharing. I don't understand why people will spend good money on a relic like that. It was free for me. I don't think I would spend that much on any tablet.
Speaking of which we just got a load of a few hundred whatever fairly current tablets. Clean, wipe, grade 'em and somebody will want them. Windows 10. Yuk. Windows and tablets are no bueno.

Yeah cause all browsers on iOS are a Safari front-end. And Safari on iOS or iPadOS is actually very good and you don't need anything else. (Great against fingerprinting, blends in due to not having any privacy settings you want to change, great way to handle extensions like ad blockers, important parts of it are open source https://opensource.apple.com/source/ )

Also an iPad with an A12 chip is probably the most secure device out there at the moment in real world testing.

Windows tablets are meh idd.

Interestingly I used a search engine and just typed "Chromium".
Wow this project has more forks than the Old Country Buffet!
They are working on an OS several different flavors of the browser and who knows what else.
Seems they are trying to wrestle control of the open source project from Google.
You know I have mixed feelings after seeing what happened to Java.
But interesting. This Windows guy is going to have to do some more sniffing around.
The only thing that concerns me is stability of the OS. Who's minding the store so to speak?
That's how these open source projects wind up in the toilet. A couple of bad moves and people are afraid to mess with them anymore. Not saying it's gonna happen, just something to keep your eye on if you go that way.
Keep in mind this isn't some GUI slapped on Linux, it's built from the ground up.

Google is big and likes to be transparent. Loves open source and there is no reason to change that. They already have the best ad platform out there and this happened with the open source Android release.

As long as people are using its platforms and the data mining goes on, it will stay like this.

On top of that you get also high end security. They also don't and don't have to sell your data either. I just feel uncomfortable giving my data to google. For example would i use gmail for my business email account? Sure, so i take advantage of the best security out there. For my personal email account? No way.

Also by the way, at https://chromium.woolyss.com/ there is a really good ungoogled chromium build that auto updates if it is used with chrlauncher. Advanced users should check it out.

I did read the report. It cracks me up that they state it's the source behind Chrome but won't even mention Edge. I guess it's a pride thing :p. I don't think I would like to be associated with the Microsoft of 2020. Now that I'm thinking about it, it's like dayum Microsoft isn't even bothering to write their own web browser that at least they think is better. What's this world coming to anyway?

Thanks for the update th3m!

Well of course I did. I guess Google is kinda sorta supporting this project one way or another.
The discussion is very interesting and to me it appears 100% factual and a good read.
It's kind of reassuring that what I have felt most comfortable doing as far as browser security seems to agree with the discussion. Still no real mention of Edge in those discussions, I'd love to hear what's going on behind the scenes. Funny how I am more comfortable with Google than the current Microsoft. Google has been more upfront with their policies than the others.

EDIT:
Just in case you haven't heard be careful where you download Chromium/Chrome from. I can't tell you how many times I have run across what appears to be a legit install of Chromium that turns out to be an adware/spyware mess. That's the risk you take with open source. Anyone can mess with it and pack it up to look genuine. I ran across a rogue install today and it was wreaking havoc on the users system.
