Computer running way too slow and hanging up

My I7 computer with 16 GB memory has chronic problems with running way too slow nokia ringtones
and hanging up to the point sometimes that it is unusable. I think something is running in the background which is slowing it down....I checked task manager, and disabled non-essential functions. It even might be MS one-drive. I can't figure it out.

It might be worth taking some further steps and configure the system for a Clean Boot. If you are running a third party security suite you should probably consider uninstalling that and just relying on the native protection provided by the OS.

We need more info in order to help you, when things started happening? Did you scan your PC for viruses, did you check Hard drive usage, did you check hard drive for errors (example Hd tune software), which version of windows do you have installed?

Please provide as much info you can.

Look at your task manager. Where is the bottleneck? What's sucking up all the resources. Is it CPU cycles, drive activity or memory usage (which I doubt if you have 16 GB installed)
Do you know how to check that stuff with the task manager? It should tell you everything you need to move on and fix this. If the task manager is hidden, then it's an infection. Run malwarebytes to start with and see what happens.

Why dont you check on how many malware and virus programs you have installed. Use only one! you do not need 30 of them, also try booting with minimal background programs running, could also means that your hard drive is failing. Hmmm you have to take baby steps, to figure this one out, i would just save everything and start fresh, you might a malicious program bogging you down.

One step a time is needed to know if there is hardware problem or software problem. Do you have a chance to move your "system" on another hard drive? Best case on SSD in good condition (it should be fast and without much work around it).

If it will run without any problems, than you will know it's previous hard drive. If it will be still way too slow, than try install new system on that drive, than you will have your answer if it's hardware problem or software.

BTW in any case, don't forget to make a backup if something "goes wrong"

boot system with usb drive (usb 3 is fast enough, if you have a good thumb drive, or you can put a fast ssd in an enclosure for basically the same speed you would achieve with an ssd internally; they even have the m.2 adapters for usb 3 now)
so if you can run a version of linus on a thumbdrive you can see if the computer itself is slow or if it is windows

so if it is windows, you can run a cdrom or usb boot virus checker, or rootkit checker, etc, rescue disc
also try maleware bytes and other things; maybe it will turn something up

lastly, just wipe the thing and start over
it could be a bad hard drive that isn't quite dead yet; they sort of limp along after a while; the S.M.A.R.T. readout should show something; try "crystaldiskinfo"

i used to worry about having a clone image of a fresh install of windows, for such an occasion; if something went wrong i can just do a quick restore and go, but really a fresh install is better, and pretty darn fast these days

1. try to boot to a usb stick with linux (like 'linuxmint') [or cd/dvd]
2. try a 'rescue disc', to remove any viruses or other things
3. try various antivirus anti-malware things within the windows environment
4. check SMART info for bad hdd, or explore other things to check hardware
5. fresh install of windows
