Personally I settled on AIMP. It simple, no frills and has enough audio settings to customise the various playback devices I use. Don't get me wrong I don't have any high end audiophile equipment but a couple of high watt playback speakers and devices. Nothing special, just uncluttered simple playback.
EDIT:
I spent a month trying out a whole bunch of audio players. It's worth noting I don't use my phone as a music player. I either wait until I get to my destination and remote from my NAS or I picked up a late generation iPod with a like new battery and use the bluetooth feature to connect to whatever. I don't believe in discharging my Pixel's battery viewing tik tok or music, I guess I am old school.
I stick by using AIMP. It is continuously updated and has all the features I need without seeking out plug-ins. If I was producing music I suppose I would need more features, but I don't. I guess some programs allow better playlist management that I don't need. I am still working on the best way to manage the iPod, haven't found it. I am still trying to perfect that, I may fire up the Mac Pro to handle that.
