hi everyone i've downloaded the windows xp installer, but i after the first reboot, i cannt get past the installation phase; it says that the file asms on windows xp pro sp3 cd is needed. ive tried to follow the resolution presented in the microsoft support but i cant open the regedit.exe - the system cant execute the program is what is indicated in the cmd. please help ..

Hello I have a problem. I downloaded PROFESSIONAL SP3 Jan 2015 + SATA Drivers [TechTools]
and used rufus to make USB bootable. I started setup and it copied lots of files to folders etc. And after first reboot when it was going to continue it's setup it said this: The file 'asms' on Windows XP professional Service Pack 3 CD is needed.

I have an option to search in GlobalRoot\Device\HarddiskVolume4\I386 . I try to retry it but it doesnt file the file. I dont know what adress I should write in. When i look into that USB memory there is a folder called asms and its adress is F:\I386\ASMS .

could someone help me how to continue my XP setup ?

I get the following message on the windows setup bluescreen:
"Setup cannot find a cd-rom drive"
Therefore, I am not able to complete the installation from my bootable USB drive.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

By the way, I do not have any cd-rom on my PC, but I thought I didn't need on to install XP from my USB

You can burn it to CD or use USB stick.

Hope questions are allowed here, I don't know what else I can do:

To beginn with, can there be evil ghosts in my machine, making installation of systems that I have had on CD's for many years and never hae encounterd any problems before, but now I can't get beyond a certain point. Not even with fresh downloads. Are my machines infested with virus? See my profile and ypu may appreciate that after four weeks of continued struggle with such problems I am exhausted, I am feeling very bad and feel like I am near the end, period. Especially wrt systems no logner available if youd want to buy them. Had one such copy of XP that I bought secondhand, with both genuine OEM and ACER regsitrartion codes - but alas, the CD now has developed errors such that many files have to be skipped during install, with predictabe consequences.

With all hardware problems, for the past three months my life has been dominated by pc hardware and software problems and each time i try to fix a problem it only gets even worse than it was before. I am worried abut my health, I don't think my wife realize how bad my condition really is.

If you think that your system is infected you can do fresh install of windows XP.

I did, but when I boot from my USB, my computer screen displays "Setup cannot find a cd-rom drive".

Appreciate the quick reply. Just tried that twice to no avail, using rufus to create the bootable USB; MBR partition scheme for BIOS and UEFI computers. It just gave me the same error as before.

Unplugged all additional devices (secondary hard drives, disk drives), only connected devices are my hard drive and the USB stick with the installation files. Gave me a new error along the same lines;

"Windows XP Professional Setup

No previous version of Windows NT can be found on your computer. Setup cannot verify that you qualify to install this upgrade product.

To quit Setup, press F3."

Wipe your hard drive and try again (some users said that they had problem with USB stick so they used CD).
