Hey I'm trying to recover files but I have no idea how to do this step.. Can someone please help? (Yes I do know I'm a brain dead idiot)
I don't have the $ to buy the license and I cant for the life of me work out how to do this :(

3) Copy and replace recoverit.exe in to installation directory

Hi,

Installation directory is folder where software files are stored, right click software icon -> Open file location (This is software installation directory.)
 
In most of case that folder is the "Program Files" or "Program Files(86)".
But if you installed the application in a different folder than you have to copy the file to that folder.

Not necessarily so. It can be in the app sub-folder and even other places. Stick to Thumper's tip and you can't go wrong.
