Hi!I have Windows 10 64 bit machine.I am trying to create a system restore point but machine hangs and stalls at the "create system restore point" as shown on screenshot below for hours and I cannot do anything on the machine and I am eventually forced to restart machine by pressing power button.

I am having same challenge (ie machine hangs forcing me to restart) when trying to create a system image,USB recovery drive and using Macrium backup.

Kindly aid in resolving this as I have no Windows backup or restore point.

Thanks.

Sounds like there may be some errors on your hard drive or possibly your antivirus is seeing something it doesn't like. I'm not sure your a/v will report suspected viruses when in image creation mode. Try a back up with your a/v disabled. If that doesn't check the disk for errors. Your best bet is either to use what your systems manufacturer has supplied or go to the drive manufacturer's site and use their diagnostic software.
Hopefully if your back up program is hanging up on bad sectors they will repaired and your program will proceed. The only other option would be to use a program that forces reads including bad sectors. Let us know and I will find you one, I haven't used one in a while.

Restore is great for rolling things back only since last change, like testing a new program which interferes, and you want to go back only a few days.
Meanwhile, while I have a Win 10 'puter, my workhorse remains my old laptop which I got in Vista days, upgraded to Win 7. I don't want to "refresh" and reinstall 100's of old programs and their cracks. Every time I try System Restore on it it fails, no doubt an onion skin kludge of interlaced OS versions by now! 32 bit forever!
Sometimes I get messages that I can't install something "on Vista." Which shows you the old core is hiding down there.

Use Macrium Free, when things are working right, image the entire C: drive. It also makes incremental backups and you can use this for going back only a little bit. Store your images on a removable USB drive. Macrium can add choice to your boot menu to boot it instead of Windows, thus you can restore from the backup images.

Try this app out for backups it's pretty tight: https://www.macrium.com/reflectfree# does a splendid job backing up/restoring.

uniqfox He already said: "I am having same challenge (ie machine hangs forcing me to restart) when trying to create a system image,USB recovery drive and using Macrium backup." Which means that Macrium app doesn't work either...

You should test HDD or SSD and memory for errors. If no errors there is no point backup OS because you "broke" Windows. You need clean install or refresh then see if the same situation happens to you again.

If it is a critical data recovery situation you can always boot from a Linux distro then manually copy everything including hidden files to an external hard drive. But for most people they either want multiple restore points to go back to like a time machine or they just need to copy their personal irreplaceables before refreshing or clean installing. It's always possible I guess that Windows 10 just doesn't like your current state and is giving you an attitude, it is after all an extremely weak & uninspired damage control hype release of Windows after 7 ate 9.

I had this problem before on a old machine what I did was went to tweaking.com and downloaded the "Windows Repair Tool" what it did was found critical files LOCKED and replaced them also restored many system files that had been changed from the original files restoring them thus fixing everything. It took a wile for it to complete but for me it was worth it.

I had system restore stop working one time a long time ago and I'm not sure how or why but the system restore service had got set to disabled. This didn't stop it from functioning completely it just would never do a successful restore. I rarely use it now. I use AMOEI Backupper. I keep a few backup images and a continuously syncing backup on separate drives. This way if my backup drive fails I still have another backup image on a 3rd drive. That may be a bit overkill but I got tired of starting from scratch. I like you swim in shark-infested waters and chalk up getting bit every now and then to the price we pay for not paying.

But hey the OP hasn't responded a single time to his thread so I guess he worked it out.

another possibility is to create a wim-Image, and you can create an automatic installing image of it, so you can re-install your wanted system with your own wishes.
DISM Overview

You still have to re-install all programs you have installed like games, music progs etc.
that's why it's best to start over, to build it from the bottom, a fresh new start. the OS on C:\ and the rest on D:\. when it's done, then capture an Image from C:\ and you have an image for the future.
GAMES....you can always reinstall, savegames are normally stored in the cloud. savegames could be also saved somewhere really save when it's not gaming via steam or Epic.
